The trucks are putting salt down on the main routes and sand down on bus routes and collector streets as blizzard and snowfall warnings set in for Manitoba, said Ken Allen of the City of Winnipeg's department of infrastructure.
"Those crews are working around the clock to try to improve traction for motorists," he said.
On Thursday morning, major routes are the crews' focus and collector and residential streets are scheduled to be sanded and salted in the afternoon.
"You know they're generally travelling at higher speeds on those main routes too so we really want to try and maintain those," Allen said.
He is asking drivers to slow down, especially following a 17-vehicle pileup on Bishop Grandin on Wednesday evening.
That area, he said, is where wind and blowing snow make salting less effective.
In spite of poor road conditions, by 8 a.m. Thursday morning, only two school divisions had closed for the day.
For now, Allen said there is no word on when plows will come out because salt will likely work for the demands Thursday's weather is putting on the city.
"The City of Winnipeg is very good at clearing snow and we're prepared for anything that mother nature can throw at us
