Middle-class Albertans will take a huge hit in their pocketbooks from the NDP’s new $3-billion annual tax on carbon — and it won’t even make much of a dent in the province’s overall greenhouse gas emissions, says Wildrose Leader Brian Jean.

“It’s not going to reduce emissions,” he told reporters at the legislature. “It’s going to increase emissions.”

Jean noted that in 2013, Alberta emitted 267 megatonnes of greenhouse gases.

“Under this plan in 2030, after 15 years of this plan and $45-billion in taxes, the government is projecting that Alberta will emit 270 megatonnes,” the Wildrose leader said.

Jean dismissed the price on carbon as a tax grab, noting that in British Columbia where the government imposed a $30-a-tonne tax on carbon, it at least lowered income taxes to offset the increase in gasoline and home heating costs.

“The NDP will try to tell Albertans their new tax will be revenue neutral,” he said. “This is simply untrue.’

Jean said the fact that the proceeds of the new tax will be spent in Alberta does not make it revenue neutral.

“The new economy-wide carbon tax will cost the average household in Alberta at least $500 more a year just to heat their homes and drive their cars,” Jean said. “That does not include electricity and it doesn’t include the impact of the carbon tax on the price of everything else.”

He said the so-called adjustment fund created from the proceeds of the tax will do little to soften the blow.

The report leaves the option wide open for the money to be spent on “other government priorities,” Jean said.

“This means it will not flow back to Albertans,” he said.

In announcing the plan Sunday, Premier Rachel Notley said one option the government may consider further down the road is using a portion of the carbon tax to pay down the provincial debt.

Jean noted the NDP government’s decision to accelerate the retirement of the province’s 18 coal-fired power plants could lead to the “most dramatic power price spike in Alberta history.”

“It’s unclear who will be bearing the majority of the costs to shut down our coal-powered generation — consumers as consumers, or consumers as taxpayers through government bail-outs,” he said. “One or the other will happen.”

Jean said the Wildrose does support some aspects of the climate change plan, including its focus on improving energy efficiency, and supporting research, innovation, and the expansion of the renewable energy sector.

Ну, ради спора, можно возразить, что как раз во власти правительства - сделать так, чтобы налог платили супербогатые (и физлица и корпорации) и не перекладывали его ни на кого. Т.е. такой способ сделать их чуточку беднее - дабы остальным легче жилось. А как уж этот способ называется - дело десятое...

Ну вот искусство управления государством в том и заключается, чтобы они НЕ свалили, и согласились на такой налог.
А иначе никакие прогрессивные изменения невозможны, ибо за них кто-то всегда должен платить, а со среднего класса взять уже просто нечего.

Мне кажется, чисто по-житейски: если у тебя 1 млрд, и тебя просят выделить 100 млн. на этот налог - то нужно выделить, и не бухтеть. Оставшиеся 900 млн. - это все равно очень много.

Ну, разве что по-житейски....
Мне тоже так кажется, но вот им, у которых хотя бы 1 млрд, почему-то так не кажется. А их детям-то как не кажется!
В том-то и дело, что в современном мире так невозможно сделать, есть, кроме Штатов и Монаки всякие... Побегут, тка свист приватных джетов будет стоять в канацком небе.

Ну, если честно, мне бы тоже так не казалось, кабы у меня был миллиард :)

Я думаю, сделать возможно все, если захотеть. Понятно, им в ответ нужны будут какие-то уступки тоже. Я бы предложил избавиться от дифференцированной шкалы налогообложения, и заставить платить всех единую ставку, даже с дохода 1 доллар. Думаю, им бы это было интересно.
